The Well
The Well is a visual exploration of how historical events and collective memory shape our perception of the landscape. In the small Dutch village of Watergang, a well sits on a patch of land bordering my garden. At first glance, it seemed insignificant. But as I looked at it every day from my kitchen window, I kept wondering what it might reveal from the past.
As I spoke with villagers, I uncovered a web of stories that sparked my imagination. Were they true? Eager to find answers, I traced cadastral maps, sifted through archives, examined old photographs, and searched for the family that may once have lived on that piece of land. If they ever did.
What began as a quiet curiosity grew into a layered search through time and resulted in a reinterpretation of the narrative. In The Well, photography and archival material converge in a story that drifts between the real and the imagined. It reveals how an object in the landscape carries traces of what was once visible, and questions how much still remains hidden from plain sight.
With gratitude to Waterlands Archive and the residents of Watergang.
